Coaching Staff

The Stony Point Lacrosse program is led by veteran Lacrosse Coach Michael A. Cohen.

Serving as both the Stony Point Lacrosse Program Director and Head Varsity Coach, Coach Cohen’s background is ideally suited to bring the Stony Point Lacrosse Organization to the next level.

Coach Cohen hails from Suffolk County Long Island, where he learned to play lacrosse while in Huntington. Huntington is a perennial powerhouse of lacrosse on the Island. After High School, Coach Cohen played four years of collegiate lacrosse at Purdue University, whereas a senior, he was a starter. He also has over a decade of club ball experience post-college with teams in the Midwest and here in the Austin, Texas area. While playing club ball in Austin he also served as the team’s President for several seasons.

Coach Cohen has also been active as an official, and in various leadership and organizational roles in the Texas lacrosse community. Most recently, Coach Cohen served on the Board of Directors for the Texas High School Lacrosse League which oversees all High School Lacrosse activity across the state.

Coach Cohen has coached both middle school and high school teams here in Central Texas.

Coach Cohen led the Panthers Seniors Middle School Team from their inaugural 2023 season through this past spring. He also had coached an undefeated season while at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School for their Seniors team back in the early 2000’s.

At the High School level, Coach Cohen was the Athletic Director and Head Varsity Coach of the Division I McNeil Maverick lacrosse club here in Austin for five seasons. This stint as a Maverick led to five winning seasons and five seasons of post-season participation, including one trip to state where they finished in the top three.

Coach Cohen was also Head Coach for the Round Rock Dragons for five seasons. Except for the first season, which was the program’s inaugural season, each season resulted in a winning record including one undefeated regular season. He also concurrently coached their JV team to several undefeated seasons. Coach Cohen built the program from approximately a dozen players to more than seventy across three teams and a staff of seven coaches during his tenure.

Some of the players that Coach Cohen has had the privilege to coach have gone off to be notable players in Texas College lacrosse as well as at NCAA Division lacrosse programs at various levels.

Coach Cohen is excited and honored to continue to Coach and lead Stony Point Lacrosse for the upcoming 2024-2025 season. His love for the sport of lacrosse and coaching young men will hopefully translate into a successful future for Tiger Lacrosse!

Coach Michael A. Cohen

Coach John Spells has been coaching youth through high school lacrosse players since 2022. This will be his third season helping coach the Tigers Varsity Squad.  

Prior to coaching, Coach John Spells played 2 years in college at the NAIA level for Ottawa University. He was a versatile player contributing at Close, Midfield, and LSM defensive positions.  

Coach John Spells will serve as the Defensive Coordinator for the Tigers this season.

Coach Spells is excited to again be on the sidelines helping the Tiger Lacrosse team improve and become serious contenders this season in the Texas High School Lacrosse League!
